More ways to explore

Bike paths & Horton Pond

More than 24 miles of paths and trails make biking a scenic way to explore. Bring your bicycle or check local rentals and the official route map.

At Horton Pond, watch for turtles, birds and alligators from the wheelchair-accessible observation deck, then walk the 0.7-mile Tupelo Trail. Wildlife sightings vary; never approach or feed animals.

Water slides & mini golf

Seasonal Summer Waves Water Park has slides, a lazy river and other ways to cool off. Check its calendar, tickets and attraction requirements before visiting.

Across from Great Dunes, Jekyll Island Mini Golf offers two 18-hole courses with different levels of difficulty.

The glass treasure hunt

Island Treasures is Jekyll’s annual January-and-February hide-and-seek tradition. Volunteers hide clear plastic globes that lucky finders can exchange for handcrafted glass floats.

Look in public common areas and along established paths, never in dunes, marshes, residential property or golf courses. Check each season’s dates and redemption rules before searching.

Keep discovering

Explore the historic district and Horton House, or learn about sea turtle rehabilitation at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Leave room for a stroll through Beach Village and a stop by the water.

Gather around the table, or celebrate

Dining around the island

Explore The Wharf for seafood and marsh views, Tortuga Jack’s for oceanfront Baja Mexican dining, and Eighty Ocean Kitchen and Bar for coastal dishes and wood-fired pizza. The historic Grand Dining Room offers breakfast and Sunday brunch.

Weddings on Jekyll

Choose from beach settings, historic cottages, Faith Chapel and oceanfront event spaces. Jekyll Island Club Resort also offers wedding venues in historic and coastal settings.

Beach locations remain public and cannot be exclusively reserved. Consider tides, guest access and conservation rules when planning.

The island’s story & its historic hotel

Jekyll’s history reaches back thousands of years to Indigenous communities. James Oglethorpe gave the island its present name in 1733; William Horton received a colonial land grant in 1735. The island’s plantation history includes slavery and the 1858 landing of the illegal slave ship Wanderer.

The Jekyll Island Club purchased the island in 1886, and its clubhouse opened in January 1888. Today’s Jekyll Island Club Resort preserves that architectural legacy in its hotel experience. Georgia purchased Jekyll in 1947; it opened to the public as a state park in 1948.

Considering a home here?

Understand Jekyll’s leasehold ownership

The State of Georgia owns the land, and residential properties use a leasehold structure through the Jekyll Island Authority. Review the particular lease and remaining term, annual rent and fees, financing, insurance, rental requirements and improvement approvals with the appropriate professionals before purchasing.
