First Friday
First Friday of the month · City-listed hours: 5–9 p.m.
First Friday brings live music, local shopping and food to Newcastle and Gloucester Streets. Browse downtown businesses, meet up for dinner and enjoy an evening built around the people and places that give Brunswick its character.
It is a great introduction to downtown, whether you are visiting for the weekend or imagining living nearby. Check the City’s official First Friday listing before heading out for the current schedule and updates.
Marina & waterfront
Brunswick’s working waterfront is part of everyday downtown life. Brunswick Landing Marina is on the East River at 1 Torras Landing, close to downtown shops and restaurants. Boaters should contact the marina directly about dockage, availability and guest services; buying a nearby home does not include a boat slip or marina access.
For a public waterfront stop, Mary Ross Waterfront Park offers river views, a pavilion, play areas and the Liberty Ship Memorial Plaza. It is also the setting for downtown’s waterfront markets.
Shopping with local character
The Newcastle–Gloucester Street district brings together independent shops, antiques, gifts, clothing, specialty goods and galleries. Leave time to browse rather than treating downtown as a single destination.
The Discover Brunswick shopping directory is a useful starting point for planning your stops. Check individual businesses for current hours and offerings.
Theater, film & the arts
The Historic Ritz Theatre on Newcastle Street is a downtown landmark for live performances, films and community events. Golden Isles Arts & Humanities also presents art exhibitions in the Ritz’s Mildred Huie Wilcox Gallery.
Nearby, SoGlo Theatre and Studios add independent cinema, live performances and visual art to the mix. Check the venues’ programs and the Golden Isles Arts & Humanities calendar for current shows, exhibits and ticket details.
Restaurants & a night out
Downtown makes it easy to build an outing around a meal, with coffee stops, casual restaurants, seafood and a variety of international flavors. Indigo Shanty on Reynolds Street brings American fusion with Caribbean and Mexican influences, while Tipsy McSway’s combines a neighborhood bar and grill with downtown entertainment.
Reid’s Apothecary at 1618 Newcastle Street pairs dining with handcrafted cocktails and is home to The Study, its hidden speakeasy. Check The Study’s official page for current hours and daily-password instructions, and confirm entry details with the venue before visiting.
Explore the Discover Brunswick dining directory, then confirm menus, reservations and opening times with the restaurant.
Bars, locally brewed beer & rum
- Richland Rum: The Brunswick rum distillery at 1406 Newcastle Street offers a look at its rum-making process. Check the distillery’s current tour and tasting information before visiting.
- Silver Bluff Brewing Company: A craft brewery, taproom and beer garden at 1325 Newcastle Street. The brewery’s calendar lists its changing food partners and events.
- Downtown bars:Tipsy McSway’s at 1414 Newcastle Street offers a neighborhood bar-and-grill setting. Little Zooks at 1503 Newcastle Street is another downtown bar to explore.
Check each venue’s current hours, event schedule, reservation requirements and age policies. Plan a safe ride if your evening includes alcohol.
Farmers markets by the river
Mary Ross Waterfront Park hosts two distinct markets. The Forward Brunswick Farmers Market focuses on fresh local food, produce and goods from rotating vendors. The Brunswick Harbor Market brings together food, craft and specialty vendors.
Pair a market visit with a waterfront walk or a stop downtown. Check the organizers’ current calendars for market dates, hours, vendor lineups and weather updates rather than assuming every Saturday follows the same schedule.

Considering a home downtown?
Downtown Brunswick is a historic mixed-use district, not a single subdivision. The commercial streets and nearby Old Town residential blocks offer different day-to-day experiences. Tour the specific block at different times, including a busy event evening, and compare the setting with how you want to live.
- Home condition and historic character: Review inspections, repair history and ongoing maintenance. Ask the City whether the property is within a locally regulated historic district and which historic-preservation approvals would apply to planned exterior work.
- Parking and access: Confirm the home’s assigned or off-street parking, guest arrangements and any shared access. For visits and events, follow posted parking signs and the organizer’s street-closure information; a nearby private lot is not automatically available for public use.
- Flood and insurance review: Check the exact address through the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, review available elevation and property records, and obtain property-specific insurance advice and quotes.
- Ownership and rental rules: Verify any association dues, condominium documents, shared maintenance obligations and deed restrictions. Do not assume a downtown address gives you short-term rental rights. Confirm the proposed use with the City and review applicable property documents before making plans.
